The Macroom project is part of the Health Service Executive (HSE) South programme to re-configure existing residential care accommodation for older people (Community Hospitals) to bring the facilities up to current HIQA (Health Information and Quality Authority) standards. The project brief requires the design and construction of a Residential Healthcare Unit on the grounds of, and adjacent to, Macroom Community Hospital. On completion, the new RHU, will consist of 38 ensuite bedrooms in 3 wards, with associated communal areas, related clinical and utility spaces, and a central kitchen. Secure, sheltered external space and gardens will also be provided for all residents. The existing hospital shall be retained and refurbished as far as possible, and kept in operation for the duration of the new build, and phasing of construction has been considered to achieve continuity of service.
