Works description

The works include the refurbishment of the existing Malahide Casino building (a protected structure) and the construction of a large single storey extension (with ancillary staff and visitor facilities), to accommodate the display and interpretation of the Fry Model Railway Collection as a publicly accessible heritage and educational attraction. The Casino building is a protected structure (See NIAH Ref No: 11344016) – dating from the late 18th century - and is a unique surviving example of the Cottage Orné type with a predominantly thatched roof. It was last occupied (as a single occupancy residential dwelling) in 2000; it has been the subject to various planning applications since then and has in recent years been vacant. The works involve the material alteration, change of use and extension of an existing unoccupied building (formally in residential use) to that of assembly and recreation (exhibition space), incorporating a small retail space and ancillary staff accommodation. The existing building will be refurbished; existing domestic toilet facilities will be removed. Connections will be made to the new extension so that visitors can move from and through the new exhibition spaces to those in the existing building. Ancillary toilet and staff facilities will also be provided.
